Pipe Guides

OVERVIEW: Proper pipe guiding is essential to an installation of metal expansion joints. When properly applied, the guides will prevent the pipe from buckling, and are required to ensure the manufacturer's warranty. Flexicraft provides the proper pipe guides to augment our full offering of expansion joints.

Guides, including the popular Spider 10 type, normally permit axial movement of the pipe, while restraining both lateral and angular movement. The Slidex guides shown below for (3) different pipe size groups also act to support the pipe, as well as guide it.

The quantity and location of the guides is dependent upon the proximity of the expansion joint to an anchor, the diameter of the pipe, the length of the pipe run, and the pressure. See below for proper spacing.

The slide guides provide support with a rated load, in addition to the guiding function. So in addition to the required guide locations below, they may be used throughout the pipeline without the need for other supports. Spacing for pipe supports is also shown in the table below for reference.

Pipe Guide Spacing for Expansion Joints

  • The Spider 10 pipe guides are the most popular guides for use with expansion joints. They keep piping in alignment and prevent buckling when used with expansion joints, but they do not support other significant loads.

  • The Slidex 1 Slide Guide is in the family of PTFE slide guides that also act as supports, and is best suited for 1" to 4" diameters.

  • The Slidex 2 Guide is in the family of PTFE slide guides that also act as supports, and is best suited for 5" to 8" diameters.

  • The Slidex 3 Slide Guide is in the family of PTFE slide guides that also act as supports, and is best suited for 10" to 24" diameters.
